What is linocut?

Linocut printing is a traditional technique practised for over a century. It is a relief printmaking method in which a design is carved into linoleum. Ink is rolled onto the raised areas and then pressed onto paper or fabric to produce a reversed image.

My inspiration comes from the natural world, such as flowers, plants, and seasonal details noticed while walking my dog. I develop these moments into line drawings that I transfer onto linoleum and carve by hand, removing areas that won’t hold ink so the raised surfaces create the final image.

Once carved, I ink the block and print it onto paper using a press or by hand with a brayer. Each print is made individually, so natural variations in ink, pressure, and texture occur. I value these differences as part of the process, reflecting the authenticity and tactile nature of handmade work, where small imperfections add to its character and charm.

DRAW

Each print starts with inspiration, usually from nature, which I simplify and stylise into a line drawing

CARVE

I transfer this drawing to a lino block and carve away the parts that I don't want to be printed in ink

INK

Using a brayer (ink roller), I roll out the ink and transfer a thin layer of colour onto the lino block

PRINT

I print the block onto paper using either a hand press or a baren (usually the back of a spoon)
