Hello, I'm Sam

Nature has always been at the heart of my work. Whether it's the first snowdrops of the year, a woodland carpeted with bluebells, or the intricate shape of a fern unfurling in spring, I'm drawn to the small details that sometimes go unnoticed. Through printmaking, I hope to capture and celebrate those fleeting moments of beauty.

I’ve always been drawn to art and making things by hand. I completed a foundation year at art college and later studied Visual Communication at university, which led me to a career as a graphic designer. After many years in this field, I was craving a slower, more hands-on creative process and I found printmaking gave me that. I had briefly tried relief printing as one of the many topics covered in art school but discovering it for the second time really felt like coming home.

There’s something I love about the quiet and thoughtful process of traditional printmaking. Each design begins as a drawing, transferred to a lino block, which is hand-carved before being carefully inked and printed by hand onto handmade paper. The natural texture of the paper and the slight variations in each print are all part of what makes the process special as no two are ever exactly the same. Printmaking teaches me to embrace imperfection (I am a recovering perfectionist!), and the different inky marks and textures in the paper are what make each piece unique and celebrate humanity in art. Each stage in the process is deliberate and can't be rushed. It forces me to slow down be mindful and I find that hugely meditative.

Alongside printmaking, I enjoy other creative pursuits, such as gardening and I have always had a special fondness for plants from a young age. I also like to cook though I cannot follow a recipe as the urge to experiment is too strong! I love exploring new places. I think most of these interests come down to curiosity. I get a lot of joy from seeing and trying new things, watching things grow and creating something from the spark of an idea and seeing where that takes me. I think that is another reason why I love nature so much. It's forever changing, and there is always something new to learn and see if you take the time to look. Time spent outdoors is where I find the most inspiration.

My hope is that these prints bring a little of the beauty of the natural world into your home and encourage a closer appreciation of the plants, places and seasons that make our countryside so special.
